Ken Broughton went fishing on 14th September 2011, he writes:
It was my first serious visit on the river this season, (the previous visit was abandoned due to heavy weed drifting down) so I was very pleased to catch such a great fish.
The largest fish weighed 14lb 7oz caught on the 14th Sept & the other fish 11lb 6oz caught 2 days later on the 16th September. Both fish were caught on luncheon meat.

Bream caught on the fly at Tiln Lake

I took an old army mate of mine fly fishing for the first time today, he is normally a coarse fisherman. The photo (below) shows Lee Smith with the largest braem he has ever caught in his life and it was on the fly !

Estimated at between 8-9lb. Lee did also catch his first trout on the fly as well. Overall a great day for a first timer fly fishing.

Alan Booth Reports

Ken Broughton was in the peg below me on Monday the last day of the 2010/2011 season. It was cold in the east wind and neither of us had a bite at all until we hooked a fish each, almost simultaneously at dusk. We weighed Ken's first, 11lb 9oz and a cracking fish. Mine went 12lb 4oz making that 3 12's and 2 more doubles in a total of 10 Derwent barbel I have caught this year.

  Barbel Cup

On Saturday 5th March, 2011,17 members of the website “Barbel Adventures” run and owned by Paul Slusarenko from Derby met at Borrowash to fish for the “Barbel Cup”.
As it happened not one barbel was caught! Perhaps the cold North Easterly wind didn’t help.  I drew a peg that has in the past given me barbel to 12lb, chub to nearly 6ib and good perch and bream.
I didn’t have a bite but Ant Searcy from Spondon in a peg a little further downstream won most decisively with 3 chub,  4lb 2oz,  6lb – a very good fish – but topped it with a monster of 7lb 2oz.  This is the biggest authenticated chub I have heard of from our river.

The severe weather last November/ December kept many anglers away from the river bank but the chub, perch and pike still fed, if only briefly. Members who braved the cold found the odd chub to catch.
Single figure pike fell to my rod and as a bonus whilst pike fishing at Borrowash a perch of 3lb 12oz took a blue shad 2 days before Christmas.
With the weather getting milder early in the year I thought  I might be in with a chance of a barbel and between a couple of blanks managed a 7lb fish the second week of January.  A week later two 10lb plus fish in an afternoon session was my reward for venturing out on a chilly afternoon.
Since then a few more barbel have graced my net with the best at 12lb 10ounces. Photo below

Barbel

Alan with 10lb 9oz Barbel - January 2011

It was the 25th January 2011. After a cold spell with freezing temperatures it was quite mild so I thought I might be in with a chance of a barbel on our Lower Derwent Fishery. I had caught one of about 7lb earlier this month during a similar mild spell so I was quite confident of a bite.

The peg I had intended fishing was occupied so I dropped in the one above.

I tackled up two rods and baited one with lob worm and the other with a highly flavoured 14mm boilie. I had to wait about 2 hours for any action when the "boilie" rod nodded slightly a couple of times, then about 3 minutes later bent over a little, initially I thought it was some rubbish on the line and picked up the rod to wind in, it appeared to be fast in the bottom and gave it a tug to free it and it tugged back!

It was a short while later my second barbel of the year was in the net. It weighed 10lb 9oz, a little ragged on the fins- like stockie rainbows often were years ago- bit otherwise fit.

After re baiting and casting out again I had another bite about 40 minutes later, this time it was what we barbel anglers call "a 3 foot twitch". When it rolled into the net I thought it was going to be a "high nine" and was delighted when the scales read 10lb 1oz.

I stayed till dusk, there was no more action but I was more than happy with the result for 4 1/2 hours fishing.
