Rod Limit and Bank Areas |
There are four bank areas where fishing is allowed
and these are lettered A-D on the map. Limits have been applied on
the number of rods which are permitted to fish each bank area at anyone
time and these are also shown on the map. These rod limits, which
include members' children and guests, must NEVER be exceeded. The
Club is restricted to a maximum of 80 rods at anyone time. |
| |
There are two checking stations controlling
the west bank C |
and these are known as checking stations C.1 (North)
and C.2 (South). This has been done at the request of the Ornithological
Group, to reduce disturbance to birds resting and feeding in front
of their hide, by Members walking across that area. The maximum number
of rods permitted to fish the West Bank is 20 and these have been
distributed 6 to station C.1 and 14 to station C.2. Members wishing
to fish the North area of the West bank should park vehicles in the
car park nearest the sailing Club's premises and use station C.1.
Access will be through the gate to the left of the public bird hide.
The limits of fishing on this section are clearly marked. |
| |
Bank C1 - special arrangements |
The Ogston Sailing Club need to sail close to C1
bank, on occasions. On this section boats have
the undisputed right of way and anglers should be patient if
their fishing is temporarily disturbed. Any issues, which may arise,
should be referred to the General Secretary. There must be no confrontation
between users at any time as this could lead to the withdrawal of
rights to fish on this bank. Sailing may take place at any time but
anglers are advised to consider fishing other banks on Wednesday evenings
after 5 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11-00 a.m. onwards.
If the Sailing Club holds special events, this
section of bank (C1) will be closed to anglers on those days
and a notice will be placed on the checking station to that effect. |
| |
|
Members wishing to fish the South area of the West bank should park
vehicles in the small car park near Ogston Hall drive and approach
on foot along New Ogston Road to the access point to station C.2.
Members should use only that checking station controlling the area
of the West bank they wish to fish, and MUST NOT check in at one station
and check out at the other. There is a notice marking the northern
end of fishing on this section and members should proceed no further.
Members should not cross in front of the bird
watching hides when changing banks |
| 6 |
Guests are allowed |
Guests are permitted and a guest ticket should
be completed and left in the box in the checking station after fishing.

Car Parking |
Members must use the car parks shown on the map,
and must not park vehicles on roads or verges or enter either by vehicle
or on foot on to any land occupied by the Ogston Sailing Club. Vehicles
are left in the car parks at owners' risk, and no liability will be
accepted by the owners, or the Club, for loss of personal property
from, or damage to, vehicles left in the car parks. Members are advised
to lock their car doors. The gates at entrances to car parks at bank
areas A and C.1 are locked at night. Automatic electrically operated
gates control access to these two main car parks which are timed to
open at 4.00 a.m. and close at 10.30 p.m. daily during the fishing
season. |
| 9 |
Access Points |
The access gates shown on the map are the ONLY
points of access to be used. The entrance gate and access road leading
to Ogston Hall at the southern end of the reservoir are strictly out
of bounds to all anglers on foot or by vehicle |
| 10 |
Toilets |
Toilets are located near the two main car parks
and must be used. |
| 11 |
Checking Station Procedure |
Each bank area is controlled by a checking station
located near the access point, and each station has been fitted with
numbered hooks which correspond with the maximum number of rods which
are permitted to fish that bank at anyone time. In addition there
are some unnumbered hooks on which are hung metal clips. These clips
are for holding guest tickets, and their use will be explained later
in these notes. If all the numbered hooks in a checking station are
occupied the maximum number of rods will be in use on the bank controlled
by that station, and no further rods will be allowed. All members
wishing to fish on any bank area must call at the checking station
controlling that bank BEFORE and AFTER fishing it, and carry out the
following procedure. |
| (i) |
Before fishing any bank,
hang your personal membership disc, with the number facing you, on
the first unoccupied numbered hook inside the checking station |
| (ii) |
If accompanied by your
child/grandchild (under 16 years of age) hang your child's special
disc, with the number facing you, on the next nearest unoccupied numbered
hook |
| (iii) |
If you are accompanied
by a guest you should complete a guest ticket for each guest, fold
the ticket so that it will not obscure other hooks and place it in
one of the metal clips provided. Hang the clip with the ticket on
the next nearest unoccupied numbered hook |
| (iv) |
Complete all parts of
Section 1 of the form inside the black plastic folder in front of
you by making your own entry first followed by a separate entry for
each guest. No entry should be made for your child |
| AFTER FISHING ANY BANK |
| (i) |
Return to checking station
on the bank where you have been fishing |
| (ii) |
Remove your personal disc
and your child's disc from the numbered hooks |
| (iii) |
Remove the metal clip(s)
holding your guest(s) ticket(s), push the ticket(s) in the slot in
the box marked Used Guest Tickets and return the empty clip(s) to
the unnumbered hook(s) |
| (iv) |
Weigh and measure your
catch (your child's and guest’s catch counts as your own) and
complete all parts of Section 2 of the form inside the black folder
by entering the details for yourself and your guest(s) in the appropriate
columns |
| FISHING ON MORE THAN ONE
BANK AREA is allowed providing - |
| (i) |

use on the bank to which you move; |
| (ii) |
the procedure of signing
in and signing out, as outlined in items (a) and (b) above, is repeated
at the checking station on each bank |
| |
The checking station procedure |
is quite simple and straightforward, and has been
designed for the purposes of keeping accurate records and complying
with the requirements specified by the owners of the reservoir. It
is therefore ESSENTIAL for all members to strictly observe the procedure
as described, and no variations or short cuts around it will be entertained.
Every member will be required to use the checking stations on each
visit, and to carry out the procedure in respect of himself, his child
and his guest(s). Members will not be allowed to sign-in or sign-out
for other members. Access to any bank area by members, their children
or guests is not allowed unless they intend to fish that bank and
follow the checking station procedure. |

| 20 |
Conduct |
Members are reminded that Ogston Reservoir
is used for storing public water supply, and that facilities for angling
have been granted to the Club on the strict understanding that members
will act in a responsible and sportsmanlike manner, and do nothing
which might possibly result in polluting the water |
| 21 |
Joint Amenity Users' Committee |
A Joint Amenity Users' Committee,
comprising members of this Club, the Ogston Sailing Club and representatives
of local ornithological groups, has been established. The Committee
will meet from time to time to discuss and reach agreement on matters
of common interest at the reservoir. The minutes of these meetings,
together with any recommendations for administering the recreational
facilities at this site, etc., will be submitted to the owners, the
Severn-Trent Water Company, for approval |
| 22 |
Sailing |
The Ogston Sailing Club has the exclusive
right to sail boats on this reservoir. In addition to recreational
sailing the Club also provide training facilities for schools. Changing
wind currents sometimes make it impossible for boat crews to avoid
coming in close to the reservoir banks, and if this occurs, members
must temporarily cease casting until the boat or boats have passed,
to avoid injury to the crews or damage to the boats. Members of the
Sailing Club have no wish to disturb anglers by encroaching on their
fishing grounds, and will not do so intentionally. Excellent relationships
have been established between this Club, the Sailing Club and the
ornithologists, and each of these bodies expect their members to respect
the rights and privileges of the other interested parties. A very
serious view will be taken of any member of this Club who commits
any act which could damage these friendly relationships |
| 23 |
23. Emergency Warning and Rescue System |
Arrangements have been made with the
Ogston Sailing Club for boat crews to come to the assistance of any
angler who may be in difficulty through sudden illness or accident.
In this eventuality the angler nearest to the person in difficulty
should attach a handkerchief or some item of clothing etc. to the
end of his fishing rod and signal by slowly waving the rod from left
to right. On observing the signal, the crew of the nearest boat will
proceed as quickly as possible to render whatever assistance may be
necessary. All members of the Sailing Club have been informed of this
procedure which must not, under any circumstances, be used except
in genuine cases of emergency. |
| 24 |
Checking Day Permit Anglers |
Members and Club Bailiffs are
asked to check on all persons found fishing at this reservoir and
any incidents should be reported to the Club General Secretary as
quickly as possible, together with whatever information can be obtained |
| 25 |
Members' Children/ Grandchildren |
Members who wish to bring their child/grandchild
(under 16 years of age) to fish at this reservoir should apply to
the General Secretary for a special disc. When attending with their
child/grandchild, members should place their child's special disc
on the nearest unoccupied numbered hook to their own. No entry should
be made for a member's child/grandchild on the forms provided in the
checking stations, as any fish caught by the child/grandchild counts
as the member's catch and should be entered as such. |
| 26 |
Members' Children/ Grandchildren and
Guests |
Members are responsible for the safety
and conduct of their child/grandchild and guests, they can only fish
on the same bank as the member. |
| 27 |

All members must use the checking
stations, and complete the procedure for themselves, their children/grandchildren
and their guests. They must not "sign-in" or "sign-out"
other members or their guests, and they must not move or interfere
with the discs left in the checking stations by other members. |
| 28 |
Club Bailiffs |
who are not also Club members and
who are allowed to fish occasionally in return for their services
will be issued with a special disc for use at this reservoir. The
checking station procedure for these Club Bailiffs is the same as
for Club members, except that they are not permitted to take a guest.
|
| SPECIAL NOTES |
| Fishing is not allowed
on the following areas, and members must not attempt to gain access
to those areas:- |
| (a) |
from the land occupied
by the Ogston Sailing Club; |
| (b) |
from the concrete dam
wall; |
| (c) |
from the land lying to
the north of the Matlock - Clay Cross Road (A6014)
(across the road from the reservoir near the Napoleon Inn); |
| (d) |
from any other stretch
of bank not included in the lengths defined by notice boards and marked
on your Club Map. |
| Private road to Ogston
Hall |
| This road above bank D
is STRICTLY out of bounds to all anglers who must not use this road
either on foot or by vehicle. Vehicles must not be parked in entrance
gate or anywhere along New Ogston Road. |
| Bank erosion |
| Anglers are advised to
be alert to possible hazards at this site, for example bank erosion
caused by wind and wave action undercutting banks which can become
unstable. Prevailing winds make Bank area 'A' vulnerable to undercutting,
and anglers should exercise care when fishing from or walking along
this bank. |
| Before visiting this site |
| Members should read and
clearly understand the list of rules governing access and fishing
at this reservoir and the checking station procedure which must be
followed on every visit. |
It
is most important that all users of Ogston Reservoir work together
to make this a pleasant place for recreation and to preserve its status
as a
Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
