Annual Assembly and presentation to Mike Habbershaw and Brenda Habbershaw

Sixty four members attended the Annual Assembly of the Derbyshire County Angling Club which took place at the Herbert Strutt Community Centre, Belper on Wednesday November 16th 2011.
The Chairman opened the meeting by welcoming members to the assembly and then asked for the customary period of silence in recognition of deceased members.

He went on to pay a tribute to Brenda and Mike Habbershaw for all the work they had both carried out on behalf of the Club over the past fifteen years. This as members are aware consisted originally of the publicity officer organising the Club’s presence at outdoor shows. In 2002 Mike went on to develop the members membership card and handbook into what it is today.

The Chairman then made a presentation to Mike of a pair of first class binoculars to allow Mike to enjoy his hobby of bird watching (ornithology). Brenda had brought Mike to the meeting not knowing that also a surprise reward for effort was to be made to her. The presentation was made by David Holmes General Secretary on behalf of all members.

Brenda was presented with a plaque to attach to garden furniture which was to be delivered on Friday. Also conveyed on both Brenda and Mike was Life membership of the Club. The Club President also stated his appreciation of the work carried out by Brenda and Mike.
The meeting then adopted the formal agenda with reports from the General Secretary, Fisheries Secretary and Treasurer.

River temperature survey on the rivers Dove and Manifold

Loughborough University are carrying out a study into river water temperatures in the rivers Dove and Manifold. This involves leaving miniature data loggers in the rivers at various locations attached to bricks on the bed of the river (see attached information). If you come across the small yellow data loggers please leave them undisturbed. There are several loggers deployed in both the Dove and Manifold in Derbyshire County AC waters, so members could encounter them on either river.

Sightings of Cormorants, Goosanders and Mergansers

Please note that the following website is available to all members to record sightings of fish eating birds. Please enter the website as a “favourite” in your web browser and help to log all sightings. When you have used it once subsequent entries are very quick to record.

The Angling Trust has launched a new web site for you and your fishing friends to record sightings of cormorants, goosanders and mergansers throughout the UK:
http://www.cormorantwatch.org
The new site is easy to use - it takes less than a minute to record your sighting.

Don't forget to bookmark www.cormorantwatch.org, keep your eyes peeled and come back every time you want to report a sighting.

The Angling Trust succeeded in persuading the Fisheries Minister Richard Benyon to carry out a review of the cormorant licensing procedure and he has stated that he is prepared to take "bold decisions". As part of this review, the Trust needs data on the abundance of cormorants to convince the government to take decisive action. So now it's your turn - go to www.cormorantwatch.org and make a difference.

Carsington News

Carsington Sports & Leisure Ltd is due to kick off its second fly fishing season on Saturday 19th March. After such a successful first season we can't wait to get our second season underway. We're busy prepping the boats, the lodge and getting a full complement of 20 boats, all with outboard engines ready for opening day.

You will find familiar faces on the staff team waiting to help you with your enquiries and that all important fishing knowledge. Fish have already been stocked at several points around the water giving you all a chance to catch! We are pleased to have another trout farm supplying us with fish this year in addition to the two excellent suppliers used throughout 2010.

Our permit prices have increased a little due to higher vat and fish costs however the boat prices have stayed the same as last season.

Our stocking levels are due to remain the same as last season with a little more emphasis on pre season stocking and more regular weekly deliveries during the later part of the season. As always there will be a good mix of both brown and rainbow trout stocked into the water, with the current high water levels we can spread our stocking around the water to help the fish spread out.

Philip White will be joining the team again this year to run beginner and improver casting sessions plus the introduction of a day course giving a little more background information into the sport and its equipment.
