The Aldbar Beat on The River South Esk

Every Spring Bank week, at the end of May, Bob Gilks and myself find ourselves on the banks of the South Esk in Scotland. We have made this very worthwhile journey, together with our families and dogs, every year since the late eighties. We therefore know the area quite well and thoroughly recommend you spend the odd week or two in Angus. We treat the week as a holiday with ‘a bit of fishing thrown in’ if the river is in good condition. It is really a week or so too early for the best of the sea trout fishing even though we have one or two successes down the years. There is however always the chance of a genuine springer if the water rises a little after a recent rainy spell. If it rains get down to the river and fish as you can always go and look at the scenery another day. It is however highly recommended that you do spend sometime sight seeing as the glens are very majestic and beautiful-especially Glen Esk and Glen Prosen/Glen Clova. If you are lucky you can see golden eagles soaring with the buzzards in Glen Esk. There are many other places to visit in the area including many National Trust properties, small coastal towns and gardens. Dundee, Forfar, Montrose, Arbroath and Brechin are all within a short drive.

Loch Lee in Glen Esk

Last year was similar to the previous year or so in that the water was low due to the snow melting early in the glens followed by the lack of rain. It did however rain a little on the Monday and Bob had a grilse of about 5lbs followed by a sea trout of 2lbs and I caught a sea trout of about the same size. We left the river two very happy souls for our breakfast. I am sure that in our absence many fish ran through the beat because we never connected with another fish all week but as they say that’s fishing.

St Cyrus
We did have some very enjoyable days out at St Cyrus and in the glens and came home looking forward to our visit in 2004.
