Crayfish Plague on the River Manifold

The Environment Agency have informed the Club that moribund white clawed crayfish have been observed at Wetton Mill on Friday 25 th July 2008 and following testing by CEFAS it has been confirmed that a crayfish plague outbreak is currently underway on the River Manifold

In order to try and contain the outbreak the EA have asked for our cooperation on the following points:

  • After fishing on the River Manifold, do not enter other rivers or still waters unless all equipment and boots/waders have been disinfected or thoroughly dried, other wise crayfish spores may be spread elsewhere.
  • If fishing the river Manifold at more than one location start upstream and work down, as entering the river and working upstream is likely to accelerate the upstream spread of the disease
  • Immediately report any dead crayfish to the EA on 0800 807060 with an accurate description of the location.

It may well be good practice to follow these guidelines on our stretches of the Rivers Dove, Ecclesbourne and Derwent when entering the river to fish.
