Christmas is the time of good cheer and there are plenty of fun-filled family events for you to enjoy in Derbyshire and the Peak District this year. So get your woollies out, wrap up warm (don’t forget your masks) and get into the festive spirit with these Yuletide events.
Christmas at Chatsworth
For the past 20 years, visitors have been celebrating the magic of Christmas at Chatsworth. For an even more magical visit, book an after dark ticket on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays until December 17th.
See Chatsworth House transformed with entrancing scenes and seasonal decorations. These include the innovative use of gems and minerals from the Chatsworth collection together with traditional decorations and the inventive use of recycled materials. All add up to a kaleidoscope of festive colour.
Buxton’s Christmas Wonderland
Sitting at the edge of the Peak District National Park, you’ll find this lovely spa town. Having the distinction of being England’s highest market town (at 1000m above sea level), it’s the perfect place to host a Christmas Wonderland.
Head to the Promenade in the Pavilion Gardens. There you’ll find children’s rides, Christmas stalls, an ice-skating rink and, of course, Santa’s grotto.
Christmas Adventure Quest at Bolsover Castle
From 27th November until 2nd January, you can enjoy some festive family fun at Bolsover Castle. Search for clues as you follow the Adventure Trail. Explore the Castle to unearth its secrets and discover some amazing stories.
Entry is free to English Heritage members. You can join in the hunt at weekends only until 23 December, then every day from 26th December until 2nd January.
Matlock Victorian Christmas Market
Put the dates in your diary! From Friday 3rd December to Sunday 5th December, from 9:00 am until 6:00 pm each day, Hall Leys Park in Matlock will once again host the Matlock Victorian Christmas Market.
First established in 1994, this event has become one of the region’s top Christmas attractions. This year there will be over 200 outdoor stalls and three marquees offering festive refreshments, local produce and a range of hand-crafted gifts.
There will also be plenty of entertainment opportunities including Proctors Fun Fair, music from bands and singers, and more. In addition, Santa will be visiting his grotto on Saturday and Sunday and the who;e event will be rounded off by a breath-taking Christmas fireworks display.
The run-up to Christmas isn’t complete without a Christmas Panto. There’s Aladdin in Buxton and Beauty and the Beast in Chesterfield. Or enjoy some festive fun at The Hungry Trolls Christmas Dinner (Derby), Father Christmas comes up Trumps! (Matlock) and Magic Kingdom of the Elves (Matlock).
